Together Townsville has been connecting people with information, support and community for 50 years.
What began in 1976 as a volunteer-led organisation helping locals understand the services and opportunities available to them has grown into a broader community connection hub – one built on local knowledge, trusted relationships and a long-standing commitment to helping people find where they fit.
Community Information Centre Townsville was established in 1976 as a volunteer organisation with a practical purpose: to help people understand what services, supports and opportunities were available across Townsville.
From the beginning, access to reliable local information sat at the heart of the organisation.
Over time, community directories became an important part of that work – collecting and sharing information in a way that made local services, groups and opportunities easier to find.
The way people find information has changed considerably since 1976, but the need for trusted local knowledge has remained.
The organisation’s work expanded beyond directories to include personalised information and referral support, newsletters, face-to-face assistance, community resources, events and other ways for people to connect with local services and opportunities.
Today, trusted information continues to be one of Together Townsville’s foundations, alongside a growing role in bringing community groups, organisations and sectors together.
As the organisation worked alongside more community groups, services and local organisations, one thing became increasingly clear: access to information is only one part of a connected community.
People and organisations also need opportunities to meet, share knowledge, build relationships and work together.
In 2022, Together Townsville was established as an initiative focused on strengthening connection and encouraging positive change across the business and community sectors.Â
Through networks, partnerships, training and community activity, that work helped extend the organisation’s role beyond providing information to actively supporting collaboration.
Over time, Together Townsville came to represent more than a single initiative.
It reflected the wider role the organisation had grown into: connecting people with information and support, bringing organisations together, strengthening local relationships and creating opportunities for community participation.
In 2026, Community Information Centre Townsville began its transition to the Together Townsville name.
The change does not represent a departure from the organisation’s history. It is a clearer expression of what that history has built.
The trusted information, local knowledge and community relationships developed over nearly five decades remain at the centre of Together Townsville today. The new name simply gives the organisation room to reflect the full breadth of the role it now plays.
This aligns with the campaign position that the rebrand should be understood as a step forward rather than a break from the past.
The tools, services and name may have evolved, but the reason behind the work remains familiar.
Together Townsville exists to connect people, organisations and communities with the information, resources and relationships they need to thrive.
From printed directories to online resources, from individual enquiries to community networks, every chapter of the organisation’s history has been shaped by the same belief:
community works better when people can find what they need and connect with each other.
Together Townsville carries 50 years of local knowledge, relationships and community trust into its next chapter.
As Townsville continues to grow and community needs change, the organisation will continue evolving too – improving access to information, creating new ways to connect, strengthening partnerships and helping people and organisations participate more fully in community life.
